Re: Logical Log Sizing

I am currently system-cum-DBA administrator for a facility with three 6 GB Informix applications running 24 hours x 7 days. The platforms (Sun Solaris + Informix 5.04) are located on different sites. Each application has its own engine and I have allocated 50 x 3 MB logical logs to each. So far as I am concerned, you cannot have too much log space. We do daily uploads of data from audio teleconferencing bridges, with hugely varying numbers of records, so the risk of long transactions is always with us. Our estimates of log space are based on the length of time taken to fill all logs if the tape process goes down or there is an unnoticed long transaction. We have two days capacity, which gives us time to get to the remote site to remedy the situation. This is a practical criterion which I would recommend. Peace of mind is a wonderful thing !
