KAIO on HP 10.0 -Reply
Posted in 1996
John: We are on an HP9000/800 running HP-UX 10.01 and INFORMIX-OnLine Version 7.13.UC1 In $INFORMIXDIR/release/ONLINE_7.1 ... 3. Kernel Asynchronous I/O (KAIO) is supported on this platform. However it is DISABLED by default. To enable KAIO set the environment variable KAIOON. It is only effective on raw partitions. For e.g: if you are using Bourne or Korn Shell, at the command line type KAIOON=1; export KAIOON if you are using C shell, at the command line type setenv KAIOON 1 The following is a pre-requisite for using KAIO: o. HP KAIO driver "asyncdsk" is installed and linked into the kernel. o. To ensure KAIO driver is up and running, check to see if there is /dev/async, if not follow these steps: 1) su root 2) /usr/sbin/mknod /dev/async c 101 1 3) chmod 0666 /dev/async ..... 15. Known defect(s) a. ... b. Due to an OS limitation for Kernel Asynchronous I/O (KAIO) on HP, at present all Informix shared memory segments are locked in main memory. There is no mechanism to free these segments dynamically. All Informix shared memory segments are unconditionally locked in. Since Informix sometimes creates shared memory segments dynamically, KAIO may cause some memory pressure in rare cases. To overcome the above limitation, you could either bring down the server and then bring it up again or do not enable the KAIO by using the KAIOON flag as suggested above. If KAIOON is already set, unset KAIOON enviroment variable. >>> John Hitchinson <hitchij2@boat.bt.com> 10/09/96 12:07pm >>> Hi everybody, INFORMIX have informed me that KAIO is supported on HPUX 10 and ONLINE version 6 and above.......we're running on HPUX 10 and ONLINE 7.11 UC1. The release notes file ONLINE_7.1 states that Kernel AIO is not supported on this platform. Can anyone confirm what release of online supports KAIO with HPUX10. John Hitchinson INFORMIX DBA.
