Re: Recommendation of a 3rd Party Backup software package

Here are my two cents worth.
I worked at Legato last year and I would recommend their product. I would
like to let you all know about a little known feature that Legato has. It is
called consolidated savesets. This is a feature that allows you to create
full backups from a previous full backup tape and a subsequent incremental.
It works like this. You make a first full backup. Then next time you only
need to make an incremental. So you are locking your files and the time to
make the backup is much less. Then off-line the tool will "consolidate" from
the previous full and current incremental backup, compare the contents of each,
take the latest version of files from either, and construct a new full backup.
Cool concept, huh? Why Legato doesn't ballyhoo this I don't know.
One thing I am not sure of is how it would work with API files such as
Informix files. It definitely works with O/S files.
If I didn't describe this well enough let me know, or better still ask
someone from Legato. You may have to ask more than one person from Legato.
It is a new feature and not everyone from Legato knows about it(!).
