Repacking a database
Posted in 1993
Hi all, We currently are looking for ways to repack our existing database to reclaim space and performance. The size of our database is currently 10 Gigs. We are in the process of deleting 1/8 of this database. The fragmentation after the delete prompts us to do some cleanup. Since this is a production system, our "down" window is very limited (23 hours). We have access to the following: 2 Gig compressed dat tape, 10 Gigs of disk space (maybe). 1) Is there a fast, safe way to repack the database? Please keep in mind of our limitations. 2) We currently have 24 chunks. Is there advantages/disadvantages if we reduce the number of chunks by increasing the size of each chunk. The reason for this is every time a user/program signs on, it uses 24 FDs. We have had up to 70 simultaneous users at once. We are running Online 4.1 on HP9000/857. Thanks in advance. ############################################################## David Nguyen Internet: davidn@geis.geis.com GE Information Services UUCP: uunet!ge!davidn 401 North Washington Street Voice: 1-301-340-5461 Rockville, MD 20850 USA ##############################################################
