More new information... A directory listing on the $INFORMIXDIR/lib directory reveals a LACK of a file (libifsql.so) and a subdirectory (tools) on the computer where everything works! But they exist on the two boxes where esqltest fails... OK! I deleted $INFORMIXDIR/lib/libifsql.so on one of the failing machines (because there was another copy in $INFORMIXDIR/lib/esql/), and then esqltest started working again! PROBLEM SOLVED!! Lesson learned: libifsql.so belongs in $INFORMIXDIR/lib/esql/, not $INFORMIXDIR/lib/. Otherwise, esqltest will fail. Jonathan, Thanks for your help.
