In my client's case, the solution was to use soft links (ln -s ) rather than the hard link. In DG-UX, when you reboot, all /dev/devices lose their hard links. However, soft links hang around. I never made the connection with the fact that these were virtual disks we were losing hard links to. I have seen some other folks answers (apparently) telling you to mknod the devices outside of /dev. Have been a system admin (fortunately,a non critical system) I have a low comfort level with this.
