Problems with roles

We are new to informix RDBMS and we notice that with Informix you can have only one role active at a time. With other RDBMS's we used to active all roles of a user at a time when he connects to the database. If you have an enviroment with a large number of tables, about 18 different roles and different user profiles (and each user can have different roles assigned), 'how can we manage this situation?. We think informix force us to active the role we need in each program, form and so on, and verify all the objects that the code references, to ensure that the active role at this that moment can view all those objetcs.
