Re: New Era for Unix Dead???

They said at the user conference in Chicago that they would come out with an option to compile even the user interface under Unix. All development would have to be done on Windows though. I doubt *very* much that such an undertaking is viable though. I wouldn't plan on doing it. As Billy sais the application server stuff with no user interface will allways be compiled on Unix or Windows NT if that is your server. And there will be no way you can compile NE3 code with NE1 (on Unix). The differences will be to large. I think we all have to relize the iminent deth of X-Windows for this type of applications. Not that it's anything wrong with it. The problem is it's the end user that desides. If to few of them want to buy it (or applications for it) companies like Informix can't afford to develop for it either. An additional issue here is that it's extremely hard (if even possible) to make an application development system that can utilize *all* functionallity in MS Windows (including ActiveX/OLE) and still be run under X-Windows. If NewEra doesn't support all the MS Windows functionallity Informix will loose out in that market as well (like they to some extent have allready done). If you realy want to do something about this you might try to look into Java. Then it will be neither MS Windows nor X-Windows but something we might call Java Windows. It's still a little early though for major applications. billy@west.co.za (Billy Wheeler) wrote: :> I'm having trouble getting a fix on Informix's plans for New Era for the :> Unix environment.
