One way we worked around it (and I agree it's ugly, but that does has a certain aesthetic appeal as an appropriate workaround for this feature :-) was to insert the row we wanted to manipulate with a certain status. At regular intervals (eg, every minute or two), we run a script that selects all records with this status; updating the status to a "finished" status code, and updating the fields we wanted to update to the values we needed.
