Re: Oracle V Informix

Over the years I've done a lot of things, moved from one software piece to another across quite a few operating systems. Unix was the first operating system I ran across where I didn't wish I was on my last one. Informix was the first database with that distinction. It's is a natural thing to wish you were back in 'the good old days'. I've been using Orrible now for >shudder< a couple of years - 'sucks' is not a word I would use. No, it's not as powerful or as flexible as Informix, but you can actually work with it - once you get a decent toolset. SQLPlus is garbage, suitable only for batch processing - go out and get RapidSQL or Toad if you need to develop anything. If you want to play DBA then look at DBArtisan - also by Embarcadero (it incorporates RapidSQL functionality). For manuals try the Oracle DBA Handbook - yes this is all third party stuff, but the Oracle documentation is incomplete and mis-directive and will make you want to scream. Their Enterprise Manager is better than anything we had in the Informix world - we just didn't need it; being the command line weenies that we are. Good luck. cheers j. -.-- --- ..- / -. . . -.. / - --- / --. . - / .- / .-.. .. ..-. . .-.-.- / ... --- / -.. --- / .. .-.-.- ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Brent" <brentmeistercomedian@hotmail.com> To: <informix-list@iiug.org> Sent: Thursday, November 06, 2003 11:54 AM Subject: Oracle V Informix > Prior to my current Oracle job I was an Informix DBA (sigh!).
