Logical Log Files are Full
Posted in 2014
A site on IDS 11.50.FC8GE/HP-UX 11.11 had the server blocked (CKPT REQ) because logical logs were full and their ONBar backup system was down. Advice: free the logs immediately with 'ontape -a -t /path/to/dir' (and optionally add a logical log or two via onparams), then switch to ontape disk backups by setting TAPEDEV/LTAPEDEV to a directory/file, with 'ontape -s -L 0' for the level-0; log backups can be driven by ALARMPROGRAM. When ontape then hit a 2GB file-size limit (errno 27), the suggested fix was to set TAPESIZE/LTAPESIZE below 2GB so output is split across multiple files. The poster confirmed logs were backing up.

Hi all,
We are in the situation. Please take a look to see if you can help. We are
running IDS version 11.50.FC8GE in HPUX 11.11.
Weve been having issue with backup system and now our logical log files are
full now. The backup system is still down and we want to redirect our backup
to disk. However, we cant get the logical log to backup, so we can shut down
the engine to reconfigure the backup to disk.
Here is the engine status:

If you use onspace to add more chunks for logical logs would that help?
ontape -a -t /path/to/dir_to/hold/logs
You may or may not be able to add logs. You don't have to add more
chunks. For now just use onparams to add a logical log or two from the
rootdbs or some other dbspace. You can always drop it later when it is no
longer needed.
FWIW, my rule of thumb is to have enough logical logs so that you can last
at least four days without backing logs up, just in case something like
this happens over a holiday weekend.

Thank you. We have them backing up to a temp location.
Hi Art,
Thank you very much for your advice. Normally we use onbar to backup the whole
database to disk storage, but the back system is down right now.
We would like to use ontape to backup the whole database to local disk. To do
so we are going to update the parameter "TAPEDEV /dev/null" to "TAPEDEV
/dump/informix/". Since we never have experience with ontape, please provide
some advises. Thank you very much.
Hi,
backup to local disk using ontape is pretty easy.
Just set up the correct path incl. filename in onconfig as TAPEDEV.
Then, with a shell script, prepare the output file using
touch /path_to_file/filename
chown informix:informix /path_to_file/filename
chmod 660 /path_to_file/filename
Then, just start ontape -s -L 0 (maybe with a cron job, which will capture the
output in a file and send it to admin with a local mail client)
Log Backup is also possible using ontape
- define LTAPEDEV as a directory
- register an alarmprogram which executes ontape -a when a log is full
Also possible: make a backup to a remote server
- check rsh support on the remote server (rsh server "ls -ls" should be
executable without password and return without error)
(use hosts.equiv file to accept the rsh commands on remote system)
- set TAPEDEV to servername:/path_to_file/filename
Trigger backup from DB server using ontape -s -L 0
Also, you can put (depending on your version) a beckup/restore filter like
gzip/gunzip,
which is executed as a pipe during backup/restore.
For this feature, you have to set two commands, one to compress, one to
decompress.
There is no possibility to set command line options (so gzip and gzip -d does
not work, use gzip and gunzip or any equivalent compression program
which is able to compress stdin to stdout).
Hope this helps, good luck !

Hi again,
The ontape command hit the 2GB file size issue in HP-UX 11.11 and IDS
11.50.FC8GE. I google the 2GB issue, and there is a lot of comments for IDS
version 7. If you know good solution for our version, please advise. Thank you.
/apps/informix/etc $ontape -s -L 0
Archive failed - function write to tape failed code -1 errno 27
Program over.
76256 ERROR -1, ERRNO 27 FROM ONTAPE, WHEN WRITING > 2GB.
Use a smaller tapesize and then when it calls for a new tape move the old
file out of way and keep going, you will end up with XX 2GB files
There are plenty of scripts out there to do this for you
Cheers
Paul

If you iset LTAPEDEV to a directory name and set LTAPESIZE to something
less than 2GB all will be well.
