Remote Access

All,
I have a question regarding remote access to an IDS instance. We had a server
(Sun 2.10) which hosted both the database (IDS 9.40.UC4) and the application.
We decided to go to a database server farm approach and separate the
applications from the databases. Essentially, database servers will host
databases only and the number of CPU cores supporting the database can be
reduced.
A new instance (IDS 9.40.UC4) was created on another, new, server (Sun 2.10)
and the database was moved to that new instance. The application will remain
on the original server. This particular application is primarily batch job
driven and thus is mostly a collection of korn shell scripts which invoke
dbaccess. As I understand it, you must install the entire engine in order to
use dbaccess - you cannot simply install the client. I modified the sqlhosts
file on the old server so there is one entry pointing to the instance on the
new server. Unfortunately, when I try to connect to the new instance from the
old server, I get an error message saying "25596: The INFORMIXSERVER value is
not listed in the sqlhosts file or the Registry." Do I need to create a new
instance on the old server for dbaccess to connect to the new, remote
instance? The old instance is currently shut down on the old server, because
it has the same name (INFORMIXSERVER value) as the new one.
Ideally, we would like to be able to use dbaccess with only the client
installed. The intent of the database server farm approach was to reduce the
number of CPU cores running Informix and having to have the entire engine
installed to use dbaccess is defeating our purpose (for this particular
application). Does anyone know of an alternative approach we could take? As
always, the application folks would like this to be as seamless as possible
(read: they don't want to make any changes to their code).
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

One alternative would be to replace the use of dbaccess with Jonathan
Leffler's sqlcmd that will only require the iConnect client software
installed.
