Kernel parameters for IDS 9.21 on SCO OS6?
Posted in 2013
User increased IDS 9.21 BUFFERS on SCO Open Server 6 to improve performance but oninit failed to start. Marcus provided working kernel parameters (SEMMAP, SEMMNI, SEMMNS, SEMMSL, SEMMNU, SHMMAX, SHMALL, SHMMIN, SHMMNI, SHMSEG) from a similar SCO 5.07 system, noting parameters should be similar across versions. He warned against allocating huge buffers (>1GB) due to a known bug affecting logical log backup.

Hi guys,
I met yesterday an old SCO Open Server 6 running IDS 9.21. The owners
asked me if there was some chance of improving performance and I tried
to increase BUFFERS, since RAM is not being fully used.
Unfortunately, when BUFFERS were increased, the oninit process stopped
starting. If BUFFERS are back to "normal" oninit starts well (after some
ipcs clean-up). This seems to be some problem with kernel parameters
that must be increased. I read the IDS machine release notes and checked
the kernel parameters, but no luck.
The IDS is certified for some release 5 od Open Server, so the kernel
tuning parameters on the IDS machine release notes are not quite the
same ones present in the OSR6.
Now the question: does anybody have access to the kernel parameters list
for running IDS on an SCO Open Server 6?
Thanks in advance
Fernando
Hi,
we have a customer with such an old system, but running with SCO 5.07
(9.21UC2, long time out of support).
Here are the tuned parameters (from /etc/conf/cf.d/stune):
SEMMAP 8192
SEMMNI 8192
SEMMNS 8192
SEMMSL 150
SEMMNU 150
SHMMAX 2147483647
SHMALL 512
SHMMIN 1
SHMMNI 200
SHMSEG 6
Should be the same as in SCO OS 6, as the IDS requires the limits and the OS
only grants access.
But - this is for a very small instance, taking only 200M of memory, Your
configuration could
easily be in need for higher values (maybe for SHMSEG. SHMMAX is max for 32
bit system, I think).
The IDS settings used are:
BUFFERS 80000
SHMBASE 0x82000000
SHMVIRTSIZE 64000
SHMADD 8192
Maybe you can give a hint what limit was touched. Check /var/adm/messages or
syslog.
You cannot allocate huge amount of buffers in this configuration (like > 1
GB), I think remember a bug
which prevents logical log backup with big initial shared memory segment.
Hope this helps,
Marcus Haarmann

Thanks Marcus, that's very important information, especially that
warning about large shm segments! One more reason to follow Art's
advice. :-)

That's for sure, Art! If only 4GL runtime licences were not so much
expensive than IDS licences... ;-)

Ahh, talk to me about replacing 4GL with Querix Lycia! How about runtimes
for $65US per single user seat or for a web server or application server
node runtime license (annual renewal is $53) or less if you need many
licenses. Developer seats are $1300 for the first seat but $2600 gives you
an Developer's Lycia 4GL/ESQL Site License (annual support / license
renewal is 50% of the initial cost). All in all this is MUCH less than
renewing your legacy 4GL licenses and you get lots of new features and
capabilities to boot!
Lycia is nearly 100% compatible with legacy 4GL and even with 4Js Genero's
extensions. You can port your existing apps to Lycia in days with no
modifications deploying them to a GUI or even to a web page then add GUI
specific features over time.
