Upper case in index?

Hi, I would like sort the column of people's name upon either upper case or lower case while the actual name could be mixed case. For example McDonald should be after desLark. I could not find a way doing this in Informix so I have to add a column basically mirror the name column but in upper case. It's kind of waste, isn't it?
