Informix as a linked server in sql 2000
Posted in 2008
The poster asked whether anyone had successfully set up Informix as a linked server in SQL Server 2000 using OpenLink ODBC drivers, being restricted by company standards to OpenLink's approved client-side MT drivers (no OLE DB, no IBM Informix ODBC driver). One reply thought it simply worked; another just outlined the Enterprise Manager steps for adding a linked server and suggested the IBM driver instead. Resolution: OpenLink support told the poster their Informix drivers were never certified against SQL Server, because Microsoft's OLE DB-for-ODBC provider conflicts with Informix over metadata; some issues were addressed in the 6.x drivers (unusable here), but linked-server use remained uncertified.

Has anyone ever configured Informix as a linked server in sql 2000 using Openlink ODBC drivers? Before anyone suggests using oledb, the requirement is to use odbc and only odbc.

a. Click Start, click Programs, click Microsoft SQL Server, and then click Enterprise Manager. b. In SQL Server Enterprise Manager, select the appropriate SQL server, and then click the Security folder. c. Right-click the Linked Servers folder, and then click New Linked Server. d. From here onwards you need to select appropriate driver(in this case OpenLink Informix ODBC) and provide necessary connection details(i.e Informix server name, database name, UID/PWD etc). Why don't you use IBM Informix ODBC Driver? -Shesh KStahl <ktsahl@yoohoo.com> Sent by: informix-list-bounces@iiug.org 03/04/2008 08:07 To informix-list@iiug.org cc Subject Informix as a linked server in sql 2000 Has anyone ever configured Informix as a linked server in sql 2000 using Openlink ODBC drivers? Could you please elaborate on "approved" part? How did you get it "approved"? Who "approves" it? -Shesh KStahl <ktsahl@yoohoo.com> Sent by: informix-list-bounces@iiug.org 03/04/2008 20:01 To informix-list@iiug.org cc Subject Re: Informix as a linked server in sql 2000 Sheshnarayan Agrawal wrote: > > a. Standards are established to ensure inter operability between applications and platforms. It involves system verification testing and regression testing. That means I just can't willy-nilly throw any solution I come up with at a problem. Anyhow, I finally received an answer back from Openlink support. They have never certified their Informix drivers to work with SQL Server. The problem is that the MS oledb drivers for ODBC do not agree with Informix in the arena of metadata. They apparently have addressed some concerns in the 6.x drivers (which I can't use), but the drivers are still not certified to work with Informix when it comes to configuring a lined server.
