The Administration Guide gives some guidelines and formulae. Quickly, and incompletely, you will need, and need to determine: ROOT DBspace ~50MB plus space for logged temp table creation and if you do not move them to separate dbspaces (recommended) for the logical and physical logs (you will need enough for the initial logs created when you initialize the instance). Logical logs Enough to hold a reasonable amount of transaction logging so you do not have Long Transaction Rollbacks. This depends on the size and duration of typical and common infrequent transactions. Physical logs Large enough to not force early checkpoints. Depends on desired checkpoint frequency and update activity level. Data Sum of space needed by all tables plus the database catalogs (~4MB per database). Tables need: (rowsize+4 + sum( keysize + 4 ) * 1.15) * 2048 / 2020 Temp DBspaces Needed for unlogged temp table creation, sort-work files (when not using PSORT), and temporary storage of Physical log records during an archive. There should be at least 3 tempdbspace for most efficient sorting. Filesystem space for parallel sorts using PSORT_DBTEMP environment variable. This works best with at least three independent filesystems. Art S. Kagel
