onbar on its own

Hi all I've seen references (rummaging back through old news on Dejanews) to onbar running without a storage manager, ie just backing up to a local tape device. Is anyone using onbar like this? The docs from Informix say "... Informix provides a simple device manager called Informix Storage Manager (ISM). Bundled with On-Bar ..." but I don't know whether I have this or how to configure/activate it. Any help would be appreciated... Platform is 7.23 on AIX 4.2.1 by the way. Cheers, Jon.
