Is bouncing Informix necessary after changing BUFF
Posted in 2012
User asked whether Informix must be restarted (bounced) after increasing BUFFERPOOL buffer count from 5000 to 10000. Multiple respondents confirmed yes, a restart is required because the engine must reallocate memory in the resident segment and redistribute buffers among LRUs. One respondent noted that while some parameters like lru_min_dirty and lru_max_dirty can change dynamically, buffer count and LRU count changes require a bounce.

For example, from: BUFFERPOOL size=2K,buffers=5000,lrus=8,lru_min_dirty=50,lru_max_dirty=60 to: BUFFERPOOL size=2K,buffers=10000,lrus=8,lru_min_dirty=50,lru_max_dirty=60 Do we need to bounce Informix to bring the new modification into effect? Thank you in advance. Kern --
Yes you do. The engine has to reallocate memory in the resident segment. You've confirmed my thought.Merci :) Khaled. ________________________________ From: Khaled Bentebal <khaled.bentebal@consult-ix.fr> To: ids@iiug.org Sent: Monday, October 8, 2012 12:57 PM Subject: Re: Is bouncing Informix necessary after chang.... IBM is doing a great effort to make most of the configuration parameters dynamically changeable. As you can imagine, some are much easier than others. The change you're suggestion seems easy (just allocate more memory for the buffer pool), but in reality it would mean a lot of things... The buffers would have to be re-split between the different LRUs etc... My personal, small, and mostly gone programming experience tells me that "technically" it could be done. But it would be complex and as such relatively risky.... Also the fact that it resides in the resident segment adds issues (this was already mentioned). But hopefully we'll see it in the future... I think all databases seek the "never stop for nothing" goal Meanwhile you could change the lru_min_dirty and lru_max_dirty... But not the number of buffers and number of LRUs. Which Version of IDS? You need to bounce the engine to reflect these changes, the same can be view in the online.log From: "Kern Doe" <kern_doe@yahoo.com> Sent: Mon, 08 Oct 2012 22:30:22 To: ids@iiug.org Subject: Is bouncing Informix necessary after changing ....
