Reduce # of CPU: license cost

Customer is looking into possibility to reduce the no of CPU that is running
in database server. Reason: cost saving since current charges for Informix
license is based on CPU.
Question:
How to do that without physically removing the CPU ?
Can that be done by reducing the no of virtual processors by issuing command:
"onmode -p -1 cpu"
Should the NUMCPUVPS parameter in the onconfig file be changed as well?
-Is this the proper way? How about the risk involved.
Last I knew, this fee is based upon the hardware and not into how many CPUs
are dedicated to the database.
Your customer and/or yourself need to place a call to Informix Customer
Service and/or their account representative and discuss this with them ... not
us :)
Take care.

The Question that has to be asked of IBM. Do they charge like Oracle for every CPU in the system or do they charge for what the database is defined to use. Oracle requires hard partitioning or you have to pay for all of the CPU's in the system no matter what your software if configured for. If IBM allows you to pay while using soft partitioning then you can setup AFF_SPROC and AFF_NPROCS and you are all set. Other wise get the Admin ready to pull some hardware if it doesn't support Hardware partitioning. On Tue, 2004-01-13 at 02:46, Colin Bull wrote: > Clifton M. It has to be licensed for every CPU on the system. If you run on a system that supports hard partitioning (IBM Regatta, HP SuperDome, Sun E10K, etc.), then your account rep can work on licensing you at the domain/partition level. Processor affinity only relates to VPs...it does not restrict Informix or DB2 from using the other CPUs for other operations. -- Chuck-- Chuck Renaud (chuckr@pobox.com) http://www.chuckrenaud.com/ "I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I intended to be." - Douglas Adams
