Long txns spanning logs
Posted in 1991
Story so far: If all logical logs are filled and Online shut down, on bringing up the system Online may go into physical recovery and stay there. Ken Woghiren pointed out you could archive the logical logs from another screen and avoid initializing the dbspace. I asked if there were any gotchas: Jim Gordon (jgordon@ssf-sys.dhl.com) and Michael Meyers (Michael.Meyers@Corp.Sun.COM) sent me mail to say that if a transaction spanned all the logs it was not possible to free any logs by archiving, confirming my suspicions. If continuous archiving has been set up, any logs which may be backed up and freed will have been backed up and freed. If /dev/null has been specified for the tape device, any logs which may be freed will be discarded and freed. In either of these cases, it is apparently impossible to recover. Thanks, guys, for the info. -- Cheers - Tony. ____________________________________________________________________________ Tony Heskett: theskett@lhr-sys.ssf-sys.dhl.com | Vox: (+44) 81 747 8330 DHL Systems : Kings House, Great West Road, TW8 9HS | Fax: (+44) 81 747 0875
