How to check for all tools installed on a server
Posted in 2010
Dirk asked how to list all Informix tools installed on a server, noting that $INFORMIXDIR/etc/.snfile doesn't match the set of *-cr files (e.g. no ESQL-C entry). Art Kagel explained ESQL/C is part of the Client SDK, so it has no separate .snfile line, while the -cr files linger for historical reasons. Jonathan Leffler added that r4gl comes from the p-code product (I4GP-cr/fgpfiles), not c-code I4GL, and that .snfile content varies between releases (Gls/Messages are quasi-independent packages). Why RDS was missing from one .snfile was only speculated about (code copied rather than installed, or .snfile wiped); no definitive answer.

How do I check for all the tools installed on a server ? I had a look at /usr/informix/etc/.snfile, but this file differs from the -cr files which seem to exist for every tool installed: -rw-r--r-- 1 informix informix 114 Oct 21 2005 ASF-cr -rw-r--r-- 1 informix informix 117 Oct 21 2005 CLI-cr -rw-r--r-- 1 informix informix 99 Oct 21 2005 CPLUS-cr -rw-r--r-- 1 informix informix 69 Oct 21 2005 ClientSDK-cr -rw-r--r-- 1 informix informix 68 Dec 21 2006 Connect-cr -rw-r--r-- 1 informix informix 114 Oct 21 2005 DMI-cr -rw-r--r-- 1 informix informix 118 Oct 21 2005 ESQL-cr -rw-r--r-- 1 informix informix 114 Oct 21 2005 GENLIB-cr -rw-r--r-- 1 informix informix 103 Jan 17 2009 GLS-cr -rw-r--r-- 1 informix informix 35497 Jan 17 2009 Glsfiles -rw-r--r-- 1 informix informix 124 Jun 7 2005 I4DB-cr -rw-r--r-- 1 informix informix 103 Jun 7 2005 I4GL-cr -rw-r--r-- 1 informix informix 128 Jun 7 2005 I4GP-cr -rw-r--r-- 1 informix informix 146 Jun 7 2005 I4GPRT-cr -rw-r--r-- 1 informix informix 50 Jan 26 2008 IDS1000.sys2 -rw-r--r-- 1 informix informix 107 Jan 26 2008 IIF-cr -rw-r--r-- 1 informix informix 103 Jun 7 2005 ISQL-cr -rw-r--r-- 1 informix informix 121 Jun 7 2005 ISQLRT-cr -rw-r--r-- 1 informix informix 107 Jan 17 2009 MSG-cr -rw-r--r-- 1 informix informix 113 Oct 21 2005 OSLIB-cr -rw-r--r-- 1 informix informix 114 Oct 21 2005 SQLI-cr .snfile for example does not contain any reference to ESQL-C Dirk
Esql is included in the CSDK. That is why it is not included in the .snfiles file. The -fr file still exist, probably for historical reasons. Regarding r4gl - On some of my other systems, I actually have "IBM INFORMIX-4GL Rapid Development System" installed. So I am a little confused. I wondered about why the one server does not show r4gl in the .snfile, but I can run it I thought, maybe r4gl was installed, and then uninstalled, but then I don't think I would be able to run the binary "r4gl". And I'm not sure if the .snfile gets cleaned up if you uninstall a product. I've never uninstalled a product other than by 'rm -fr', so I've not experimented with whether the .snfile gets cleaned up by the uninstall process.
