FWIW: I think that many questions could be pigeon-holed in more than one of the proposed sub-groups, even the reduced set of sub-groups, and this negates any benefit from the sub-groups. I get c.d.i via Walt Hultgren's informix-list mail relay; unless he was willing and able to manage the sub-groups, and unless some magic could be performed so that the mailing list recipients only receive one copy of a message posted to multiple sub-groups -- none of which seems very likely to me -- I think that we would lose more than we would gain from fragmenting the news group. If it ever came to a CFV (call for votes) on the sub-grouping, my vote would be negative -- do not split c.d.i.
