HyperCard FrontEnd to Informix DB: Need help on good interface

I have a client who's looking to change a HyperCard database I made for him to a HC front-ended Informix database (back end would be on Suns). He'd been looking into ClearAcess, but went to see it at a DB show and found that: a) it didn't even work as he wanted when the ClearAccess people demo'ed it, and b) it required too many different pieces from different vendors at his setup (I'm no connectivity expert but the lineup related to me over the phone was something like HC to HC XCMDs to CA to DAL database to interim communicator (don't ask me) to the DB itself. In any case it wasn't what he wanted. He also looked at some other solutions (which he didn't name) and found them rather slow indeed, or not workable for some other reason. Now, he could go with a MacWorkStation front end, or some other solution, but he wants to maintain the HC front end, if possible. As a last resort he may go this route, since they have a large MWS document management system already in place, and could reuse some of the C++ code they wrote for this, but it would be pricey. Does anyone have any suggestions? He'd love to buy a solution from one vendor to which I could interface my HC frontend. It needs to be adaptable, stable and fast, and not require too many "pieces". Bear in mind that he went to 'Database World' (a trade show, I assume) and so may have seen many of the more obvious solutions and found them unsatisfactory. I know that doesn't help you much in suggesting something, but it means I want to suggest something that stands a fairly high chance of working.
