I'm not sure I follow you here. - Are you trying to select a unique record without using a cursor and without scanning the entire table? In this case your select should be written so as to use an index. This will limit the number of rows scanned. See the faq at www.iiug.org for a detailed explanation - Are you trying to browse a table and move from a record to the previous/next? The key answer here are cursors. RTFM "Guide to SQL: Tutorial" and look for "retrieving multiple rows" in ch. "SQL in programs". (The exact FM, chapter & section name depends on the tool, engine & version you use so YMMV) HTH, marco. ____________________________________________________________________________ rem radioterapia, which I immeritately manage, seldom agrees with what I say marco greco (Catania, Italy) Work: marcog@ctonline.it rem radioterapia 39 95 447828 fax 446558 (was mar.greco@agora.stm.it) Achea 39 95 503117 --- On Wed, 30 Oct 1996 11:33:46 GMT Marcel <atlasoft@pi.net> wrote: I work with a large database. I don't want to post a SELECT of all the records first and then skip within the selection. SELECT * takes to much time. For example: Is there a way to post a select with an expression and than only receive the first record matching the expression? Any good ideas? -----------------End of Original Message-----------------
