It's function is to make the .dat and .idx files consistent. It also reports errors found which might indicate other inconsistencies. If bcheck shows more than one or two errors you should really go back to archive and rollforward. That is not the same as DROP and RE-CREATE index. If any data has been lost due to the HW/SW failure DROP /CREATE INDEX will definitely miss the invalid data.
