No mention of it in the 7.3 Admin Guide. Sure you're not thinking of ER? Anyway, the poop I got was that external backups were added at the request of EMC, who were using their hardware mirroring to support fast backups, as you & other have described. Set the mode to BLOCK, turn on your h/w mirror, when it is sync'ed turn it back off and UNBLOCK your system. Pretty expensive backup, if you ask me, but if downtime costs you big $$, the worth it in the long run.
