Migrating from IDS 7.31 32-bit to 7.31 64-bit

Hi,
We are planning on migrating from HP-UX 11.00 (32-bit) to HP-UX 11.11 (64-bit).
We are currently running IDS 7.31.UC2A (32-bit) on our HP 11.00 box and going
to IDS 7.31.FD9 (64-bit) on the new HP 11.11 box.
I have backed up the data using ontape on the 32-bit version and I'm trying to
do a ontape -r to retore the data into the 64-bit instance but I'm getting the
following error:"Physical restore failed - could not fork server connection".
My first question is: Can I do an ontape to restore the data or do I need to
do a dbexport from the 32-bit version and dbimport the data into the 64-bit
version?
My second question is: Is there a guide/manual for migrating from 7.31 32-bit
to 7.31 64 bit or is it all too simple for something like that to have been
written? I've checked out the Informix Migration Guide for 7.31 and it is of
little use.
Thanks!
David
David
ontape is definitely NOT an option in this case. Dbexport/dbimport
is one option, especially if you want to take the opportunity to
reorganise your data and reposition any indexes/tables/chunks.
Is this upgrade all occurring on one box or are you migrating
hardware as well?
Why are you moving to 7.31.FD ? why not go to 9.4.FD, just as stable,
offers more features and is quicker and more resilient?
If you only have one box I would suggest (over two separate
periods of downtime)
1. Upgrade the OS.
2. Test informix/application
3. Run for 1/2 weeks
4. Upgrade the IDS ( this is trivial because you can do an in-
place upgrade)

Hi Keith,
We are sticking with 7.31 because we are usually quite cautious and don't like
to jump up versions!
I've found a link on the hp website where someone had exactly the same problem
as me and it confirms what you said. Basically its a dbimport/dbexport.
Thats no big deal since I've done it before.
We will be migrating hardware as well so the box I've got at the moment is a
test box and already has 64bit versions of HP-UX and IDS installed.
I like you idea of doing it progressively though. Big Bang makes me nervous!
Thanks for your help,
David
Hi,
I assume you are migrating from old to new (different) hardware, too?
If you don't want to do reorganizations/adaptions with dbexport/dbimport,
my preferred migration scenario would be:
1) install new IDS 64-bit on new HP box
2) prepare disk layout (e.g. Informix file/device links) equal to old HP box
3) copy/adapt $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts and onconfig on new HP box
4) clean shutdown (no open transactions) of IDS on old HP box
5) copy datafiles or raw device contents from old HP box to new HP box (using
Informix file/device links)
6) start IDS on new HP box - conversion to 64bit will start automatically
In case of errors in step 6) you could switch back to the old HP box

Hi Andreas, Yes we are migrating from old to new hardware. Thanks for your suggestions on how to do the migration. I'll keep all this in mind as I'm testing on our test box. Thanks, David
