SELECT FOR UPDATE in ESQL/C?

I was just wondering how "SELECT ... FOR UPDATE" in conjunction with "UPDATE ... WHERE CURRENT OF" works in languages using embedded SQL. How does the "WHERE CURRENT OF" bit get the cursor information from?
