Is this really NOT a feat

If you're using 4GL, you can get around this by using UPSHIFT().

Tech support are never wrong:)

I'm not sure about this. I've been an Informix user for 10 years now, and
*I've* never missed it!

You sound pretty militant. Well, you would, coming from the miltary:)
What database were you using before. What do you consider a "basic feature"?

Not at all! A simple 4GL program will do it for you:
DECLARE get_chem CURSOR FOR
SELECT *
FROM table_nameFOR UPDATE
FOREACH get_chem INTO p_table_name.*
LET p_table_name.field_name = UPSHIFT(p_table_name.field_name)
UPDATE table_name
SET field_name = p_table_name.field_name
WHERE CURRENT OF get_chem
END FOREACH
Anyway, IMHO it's not good to have different data in the fields joining two
tables and relying on the engine to sort it out. Bad for performance, you
know! :)
Hope this helps.
