Please see http://www.trifox.com for details. Briefly the VORTEXaccelerator caches cursors across a large number of users and connects users to a pool of DBMS slave processes on an as-needed basis, similar to a multiplexer. By doing this, you have far fewer actual DBMS connections than clients. Depending upon your application SQL mix, you can often achieve a 10-1 reduction. In your example, the 400 "connections" would become 40 actual Informix connections, less than you are running now. The VORTEX family of products has been in operation since 1990 and is used in many 24x7 operations, such as consumer goods distribution and 911 record management systems.
