Install problems IDS on Mac OS X
Posted in 2008
A user installing IDS 11.50 FC1 on Mac OS X 10.5.4 (Intel, 2 GB RAM) saw the installer report success, but online.log showed shmget ENOMEM errors ('can't create resident segment') and the server wouldn't start. Replies suggested checking ONCONFIG SHM*/BUFFERPOOL settings for oversized values and raising the OS shared-memory kernel parameters per the machine notes. The poster resolved it instead by downloading 11.50 FC2, whose improved installer set things up correctly and brought IDS online.

Dear all.
Mac OS X 10.5.4 (Intel Core 2 Duo) 2 GB RAM
IDS 11.50 FC1
Having worked through the steps of the installer (run using an admin.
account) of IDS 11.50 FC1 on OS X the installer reports the
installation process has been successful. However, when I look in
online.log I see the following message:
18:20:42 IBM Informix Dynamic Server Started.
18:20:43 shmget: [ENOMEM][12]: key 52574801: The server ran out ofmemory during an attempt to allocate a new
shared
memory segment.
18:20:43 mt_shm_init: can't create resident segment
and IDS is not running. Can anyone spot what is going wrong?
Kind regards.

Can you check the $ONCONFIG parameters? I assume you choose to create an
instance. I don't usually do this and I'm not sure if it asks for the
parameters... Is it possible you inserted a value too big?
Check the SHM* and BUFFERPOOL parameters...

Thanks for your reply.
The installation process creates an instance
I chose the default options:
ROOTSIZE:
200000
BUFFERPOOL:
size=2k,buffers=1000,lrus=8,lru_min_dirty=50,lru_max_dirty=60
Any thoughts welcome.
Regards
Check the machine notes file and the shared memory kernel parameters
You may need to increase some of these values.

Thanks to all who replied. For info I downloaded 11.50 FC2 which
comes with a rather more user-friendly installer and all is now well.
IDS on a Mac. Can't ask for much more than that.
Cheers.

Great!... I always do my installations using no GUI... In fact I should do
silent installations most of the time... Meaning I really don't appreciate
enough the work that R&D have been doing in the installer...
So, it's nice to see customers really take advantage of it ;)
