Informix Backups using ONBAR and TSM
Posted in 2011
A DBA on IDS 10.00.FC9 (HP-UX 11i) backing up with ON-Bar to TSM 6.2 reports that backups complete cleanly and the objects are visible via TSM queries, but a cold/imported restore to a second box fails with "no storage spaces to restore", and archecker -bvs likewise validates 0 tables/fragments. Respondents suggested checking it wasn't a warm restore of an up dbspace, confirming the oncfg_<servername>.<servernum> and post-backup ixbar files were copied to the target, matching chunk sizes and ONCONFIG, registering the target node in TSM (dsmc set access / txbsapswd, or changing nodename/password in dsm.sys), checking the bar activity log for mounts, and enabling BAR_DEBUG. The poster had already done most of this; no resolution is recorded in the thread.

We are having problems doing a restore from an onbar backup, using a Tivoli
Storage Manager.
This is what we have:
IDS 10.0 FC9 on HP-UX 11.i ( we tried reverting back to fc8... it didn't work
either)
Storage Management Server for Linux/x86_64 - Version 6, Release 2, Level 2.0
Backups run with no errors, and, when I run a TSM query, I can see the
datasets, but when I try to restore from the backup, onbar says there are no
spaces to restore. The same type of output is returned from archecker.
This is the archecker output from the server that is not working looks like
this:
informix@itshp7 [/home/infrmx]

Okay just a shot in the dark but there is also a bootstrap file in
$INFORMIXDIR/etc. It is called oncfg.<servername>.number. Is that file there
on the target machine?

Yep - its there... I also have the ixbar.<servernum> file.
The restore tries to start - but then it just says there were no storage
spaces to restore.
When I run archecker... it is on the source server.

If all else fails, you can set BAR_DEBUG to a number between 1 & 9 with 9
providing the most debug info. You can then check BAR_DEBUG_LOG to see what is
going on. You may need support to help decipher that output.

Here are my imported restore documentation. 1. verify chunks/links are same size as production 2. copy ixbar file from source and rename it to $INFORMIXDIR/etc/ixbar.<servernum> on the target 3. copy oncfg_<servername>.<servernum> from source and rename it to $INFORMIXDIR/etc/oncfg_<servername>.<servernum> on the target 4. copy $ONCONFIG file from source to target modify DBSERVERNAME and DBSERVERALIAS 5. give target permission to access TSM object for source dsmc set access backup /servera/*/* serverb dsmc set access backup /opt/informix/*/* serverb I don't modify the ixbar file or modify my dsm.sys file. Has the server being restored to been configured in TSM (register node TSM command and txbsapswd utility run?) Andrew
I can look at the debug stuff... but there are no errors on the backup - and
no real errors on the restore other than it says there is nothing to restore.
I'm pretty sure I did all the imported restore stuff right...
My real question/problem right now is why doesn't archecker find the backup
files on the source server...
Thanks

Subject: Informix Backups using ONBAR and TSM [23517]
We are having problems doing a restore from an onbar backup, using a
Tivoli
Storage Manager.
This is what we have:
IDS 10.0 FC9 on HP-UX 11.i ( we tried reverting back to fc8... it didn't
work
either)
Storage Management Server for Linux/x86_64 - Version 6, Release 2, Level
2.0
Backups run with no errors, and, when I run a TSM query, I can see the
datasets, but when I try to restore from the backup, onbar says there are
no
spaces to restore. The same type of output is returned from archecker.
This is the archecker output from the server that is not working looks
like
this:
informix@itshp7 [/home/infrmx]
$ archecker -bvsIBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 10.00.FC9 Program Name: archecker
Version: 8.0
Released: 2008-08-28 16:34:06
CSDK: IBM Informix CSDK Version 2.90
ESQL: IBM Informix-ESQL Version 2.90.FN431
Compiled: 08/28/08 16:35 on HP-UX B.11.11 U
AC_STORAGE /tmp
AC_MSGPATH /tmp/ac_msg.log
AC_VERBOSE on
AC_TAPEBLOCK 62 KB
AC_IXBAR /home/informix/etc/ixbar.99
AC_TIMEOUT 300
AC_SESSION
Control page checks PASSED
Table checks PASSED
Tables/Fragments validated: 0
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Does the post backup copy of the ixbar.<servernum> file exist on the target?

Yep - its there... I also have the ixbar.<servernum> file .
The restore tries to start - but then it just says there were no storage
spaces to restore.
When I run archecker... it is on the source server.

Okay just a shot in the dark but there is also a bootstrap file in
$INFORMIXDIR/etc. It is called oncfg.<servername>.number. Is that file there
on the target machine?

cold restore -
the restore box is the same version, same OS.. and I have created links for
all the dbspaces.
The only thing that is different is that the links go to cooked files instead
of raw volumes...
