I thought this. But Colin's a smart lad, certainly as long as the numbers stay below 50 ;-) So he had 16 single core. He added 8 dual core to give a total of 32 cores. That's what I think he meant.

Oi !! less of the 50 comments thank you :D Yes Neil, that is exactly what I meant, I have set NUMCPUVPS (7.31.FD7) to 23 and will be increase it to 31 in the next couple of weeks to see what difference (if any) there is. BTW, This is a dedicated DB server, we run a two tier client/server configuration. Looking at sar output at 5 minutes intervals for the same time period before and after the upgrade the %usr and %sys figures have more than halved. I'm now going to try and get them to agree to swapping the single core CPU's for dual core. 48 CPU's, 96Gb memory, IDS 9.40 (or 10).......
