Re: Informix running on Linux

This is interesting enough that Informix as well as all you others should know about it. The article mentioned is in German, so there may be a few who can't read it :-). I will hereby urge the IIUG to bring this to the attention of the right people at Informix in the US. The day they grasp what is happening under their feet they may also want to be a part of it. Here are some highlights: Company: Sixt/Budget Car rental company - yes the big one well known in the US. Installation: Changed from IBM compatible mainfraim to all Unix some time ago (a few years). Running a sentral server with 600 users on an Siemens Nixdorf RM600 Unix server (same as some Pyramid model in the US) using Informix OnLine. Local offices: 250 spread over all of Germany. Each have a Linux server (486 100MHz to Pentium 133 MHz) running Informix SE (the non supported SCO version) and application written in Microfocus Cobol. Network: All local servers are networked to the sentral site with the Linux machines acting as routers using ISDN mainly. Application: They do all their bussiness on this setup - car rental reservations. Mission critical? Anybody can judge. There are many other interesting aspects to this discussed in the interview, but I think I would have a copyright problem if I quoted much more. In a sense this sounds incredible at first reading. When you read the well reasoned background for why they have done it and how, you understand the self evident bussiness logic behind this. Everything has been evaluated, Sun/HP and similar, SCO, Windows NT. Nothing could come close to achieveing what they have achieved. A dessision made by technicians? No. Some input yes, but made by an informed board of directors. Do you grasp the implications of this Informix? You are in on just this deal, but do you want to be in this market in a serious way? If a corporation like this is running their bussiness on your databases on Linux how can you possibly not come out with an official version? As more and more information is becoming available I start to understand that Informix actually will port to Linux. It's just a question of time. If those who are currently responsible for the decision aren't able to take it reasonably fast, they will have to be overridden by more powerfull forces. It's more than likely they will be. I wouldn't want to be in their shoes.
