HDR & RSS
Posted in 2011
A user on IDS 11.10 (Windows, 250GB, onbar/TSM) asked which remote disaster-recovery option to use: continuous log restore, RSS, or Enterprise Replication. Replies said ER needs primary keys (and, from 11.70, grid handles schema changes), RSS ships exactly the same volume as log shipping, RSS can be set up without an HDR pair, auto-failover isn't supported for RSS, and ifxclone only exists from 11.50/11.70 so isn't available in 11.10. Advice also covered sqlhosts entries for both servers on each machine, trust, and SMX. The user's RSS kept disconnecting and finally failed to start ('RSS Server did not successfully start'); no resolution is recorded.

Hi,
I am trying to find out which is the best way to have an Standby IDS server a
long distance away. I have IDS 11.10 on windows with actual database data
250GB.
On Live IDS server we use onbar and TSM for whole system backup. Our database
is in logging mode but we don;t need the logical logs so we have set LTAPETEV
to NUL
1) we are trying now the 'Continuous Log Restore' technique but as I have
understand every time that the remote IDS will stop continous lor restore and
change mode from 'recovery' to 'online' you have to restore again a full
system level 0 backup on remote server and start again form the beginning log
restore. Using this technique logical logs are transfered 'manually' from
active to standby server. Am I right?
2) we have also seen the RSS [Remote standalone Secondary Server] technique.
Do I have to configure HDR on primary with DRAUTO, DRINTERVAL, onmode -d
primary sec_name ...etc
or
I have just to give on primary the onmode -d add RSS ServerB, and on secondary
the onmode -d RSS primary_servername command. Am I right;
In this technique logical logs on secondary are readed directly from primary
LTAPEDEV & TSM. No manual logical log transfer is required from primary to
secondary. Right;
What additional configuration is needed for secondary server to read logical
logs from TSM that reside on primary's place; This is done by defining on
secondary dsm.opt the TSM Server TCPIP of primary place;
In this technique how is possible to disable automatic failover from primary
to secondary;
If the secondary standalone become primary how I can revert servers to their
original mode?
Thanks
sszago
Have you looked at enterprise replication? I reckon enterprise replication is the way to go. Very easy to keep in sync, and easty fix if it gets out of sync. If you have are not keeping the logs ,that is have device set to /dev/null why bother to log at all doesnt make sense ?
Hi, ER can not be used in our case because there is no defined a primary key on all database tables and software vendor can not certify that after primary key creation his application will still be operative. Until now we don't take logical logs backup and we are based on 2 full daily backups. But because of the database size and the amount of data changed during the accounting batch a lot of 'new-changed' data are produced. The network bandwidth between primary and DR is defined and it is not for our exclusive usage. So we decided to send at DR only the logical logs. In that way not to many amount of daily data will have to be transfed at DR. Thanks sszago
FYI, the volume of data sent to an RSS secondary from the primary is EXACTLY the same as shipping the logical logs there any other way. Art Art S. Hi, I have a question. RSS is an additional feature of HRD. I suppose that an established primary-secondary pair must be existing already before been able to add an RSS server. Right? Is it possible to have an RSS wihtout setup an HDR pair [primary and secondary]? Secondary server must be exists or is it possible to have a primary and a RSS server only? Thanks in advance sszago
Hello. I think you might be a little confused around Informix HDR features. ER is a poor choice IMHO. It doesn't replicate database structure changes, meaning you have to do all that yourself. So if your database structure/indexing changes often, this is a lot of work to either do each time, or put in scripting to automate it. We have just retired our old ER setup after going to 11.7 and are Primary-->RSS only. You don't need any other HDR technology in place to do RSS. As far as automatic failover is concerned....according to the documentation, it doesn't even work with RSS (my testing proves otherwise, but that's just a lab environment...we didn't turn it on), so you shouldn't probably even be thinking about auto-failover. As far as failing back, there's a lot of documentation from IBM on it...and you can always trash the original primary, make it an RSS, clone it back from the old RSS (new primary), then do it all again promoting the original primary back to a primary. Its better to use ifxclone to create an RSS server than trying to deal with it manually in my experience...its fast, easy, and does most of the work for you.
Correction --- ER does support database structure changes (i.e. schema) in 11.70 by using the grid functionality. This is news to me. After reading through it though, it seems heavy handed and too much work for a one-2-one backup server setup....the grid stuff reads like functionality for a company with many database servers geographically disperse where you want a central DBA to easily administer changes to identical structures on all of the systems.
Hi and thanks for your answer. Does ifxclone utility exists in IDS 11.10? Thanks sszago
No. It seems to be released in 11.70.xC2, as said in Information Center: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/idshelp/v117/index.jsp?tab=search&searc hWord=informix+feature+list Regards. Actually if you configure your ER nodes as a Grid, you can use Flexible Grid commands to execute DDL across the entire grid in 11.70+. Art Art S. Agreed, HDR and RSS are certainly simpler to administer than ER, no question. ER and Grid are just more flexible and configurable. Art Art S. Hi
I have 'installed' primary [ol_xxxx] & an RSS [ol_xxxx02] IDS servers.
I was successfully established [add the RSS server]
The following 2 lines from primary online.log

Can not send log 6848
After that I gave onbar -r -l on the RSS and since then I am waiting to apply
all logical logs on RSS since the command [onmode -d add RSS ol_xxxx02]
For some time onstat -g rss on primary [ol_xxxx] was

Is it normal or do I have somehow to reestablish the connextion?
Tivoli TSM is used for data & logical log backups.

Not normal. It looks like the primary and secondary are not communicating
with each other. Verify your sqlhosts entries on both and make sure the two
servers are trusting each other - at least for user 'informix'.

Hi and thanks for your reply,
My primary IDS is called ol_scorexdb
My RSS IDS is called ol_scorexdb02
1. I have added on both server a registry SQLHOST definition for the other
member pair. So in both servers registry there are 2 entries on for the local
and one for the pair.
Do I have to define group in SQLHOSTS registry?
2. I have defined in hosts.equiv and in hosts files the name of the 'pair'
server.
3. on 'primary' I have ran the:
a) onmode -wf LOG_INDEX_BUILDS=1
b) onmode -d add RSS ol_scorexdb02 [RSS IDS]
c) onbar -b -L 0 [TSM is used for backups]
d) during the backup primary IDS is up and running. So logical log will be
contain transactions and an automatic sheduled program is going to backup the
logical logs.
4. on RSS I have to do:
a) copy ixbar & oncfg files from primary to RSS
b) the onbar -r -p [this is goning to restore up to the logical log that is
contained in step 3c.
c) onmode -d RSS ol_scorexdb [primary IDS]
d) In this step since there are additional logical logs since the last L0
backup on step 3d I will have to restore the additional backed up logical logs.
For that I have to copy again ixbar from primary to RSS and gine onbar -r -l.
Am I right so far?
This step 4d has to be repeated until RSS is behind the primary only for the
not backed up logical log. Right?
After that the RSS must be in RSS (read only) mode?
Sorry for that detailed description but I had some problems during the above
implementation.
Before starting again the whole procedure I would like to know if I haved
missed anything?
Thanks in advance
sszago
Hi Sergio,
after your physical restore (onbar -r -p), Informix should automatically
start the logical recover, until sync the two instances.
(It seems you´re facing some configuration issue between them)
Have you enabled SMX connection between them?
I suggest you to do so.... here are two beautiful links for you (11.70
versions):
1) Server Multiplexer Group (SMX) connections

2) starting an RS secondary server for the first time:

Hope it answer your doubts.

Hi,
1) Does the ENCRYPT_SMX configuration parameter is supported on 11.10?
I tried to define it with onmode -wf ENCRYPT_SMX=1 but I got an error message
that parameter either is not supported or I gave wrong value.
ol_scorexdb is the primary &
ol_scorexdb02 is the Rss
2) I have two registry entries in primary IDS:
a)ol_scorexdb [hostname= ip of the primary],SERVICE=9088
b)ol_scorexdb02[hostname= ip of Rss],SERVICE=9088
2) I have two registry entries in RSS IDS:
a)ol_scorexdb02 [hostname= ip of the Rss],SERVICE=9088
b)ol_scorexdb[hostname= ip of primary],SERVICE=9088
Can service ports be the same for both primary & rss or not?
3) on primary I have added RSS using the command
onmode -d add RSS ol_scorexdb02
onstat -g rss output is:RSS Srv RSS Srv Connection Next LPG to send
name status status (log id,page)
ol_scorexdb02 Defined Defined 0,0
4) on primary I took a whole system backup [onbar -b -w]
5) on Rss I made a restore [onbar -r -p]
after the restore IDS is in Fast Recovering mode
6 on Rss I gave the command
onmode -d RSS ol_scorexdbBUT I took the following error:
**************************************
RSS Server did not successfully start.
onmode: Please check the message log for errors.
**************************************
In online.log the following error is appended
***************************
16:30:03 DR: new type = RSS
16:30:03 Warning: Invalid (non-existent/blobspace/disabled) dbspace listed
in DBSPACETEMP: 'tmpdbs1'

16:30:03 Warning: Invalid (non-existent/blobspace/disabled) dbspace listed

16:30:03 Warning: Invalid (non-existent/blobspace/disabled) dbspace listed
in DBSPACETEMP: 'tmpdbs4'
16:30:03 DR: Trying to connect to server, ol_scorexdb. If the specified server
is not in Online mode, bring it to Online mode.
16:30:03 Data replication type and state information reset. To start DR, use
the 'onmode -d' command and wait for the pair to be operational,
before shutting down the database server
*****************************
Any ideas?
How is possible to start the whole configuration from the scratch?
Thanks in advance
sszago
Hi Sergios.
Yes, it´s supported:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/idshelp/v111/topic/com.ibm.adref.doc/ad
ref95.htm?resultof=%22%45%4e%43%52%59%50%54%5f%53%4d%58%22%20
But only when the engine is bounced (it´s a network encryption, it would
be very strange to do it online, don´t you think?) ;)
Regards!

Another thing, it would be highly recommended to separate your ports,
even more if you will use different protocols, I think
(I don´t remember if it´s a requirement, but I know it´s better for you).
Regards.

On your first question, ENCRYPT_SMX is supported by 11.10, but it was
probably no dynamic yet until 11.50 or 11.70. You will have to modify the
ONCONFIG file manually and bounce the server for it to take effect.
