Paul,
First off, when I have to load a bunch of rows into a table, I
prefer to use dbload, because you can let it count transactions.
I believe the default is 200 between commits.
The number of locks not only has to do with the number of rows,
but the number of indicies. There will be one lock created for
each for each row for each index (ie. 10k rows, 2 indicies, 20k locks).
Also, if you lock the table in exclusive mode, and do everything in one
transaction, you may overflow your logs, so be aware. Thats another
reason I love dbload.
