Field matching part of a string...need inspiration

I have a table with a list of names to be weeded out of file 'A'. As I proceed through File 'A', I read each name into a variable, 'pname.' 'Pname' needs to be checked against the entries in the table to make sure it does not exist in any form. For example, the name in my file is "George of the Jungle." In my lookup table, I have 'George' as an entry, so that listing in file 'A' should be tossed. Every permutation I've tried of like, match, or = is either too slow or produces incorrect results.
