I'm currently trying to make some design decisions on a database that will eventually grow to the hundreds-of-GB or terabyte size and the only way I can see that it can exist (in terms of performance and backup/recovery) is with Informix fragmentation. Anyway, I'm curious as to what you're thinking of when you say "managing these fragments would be impossible". Perhaps it has something to do with the number of physical disks required to take proper advantage of the fragmentation? If it helps any, it turns out that my fragmentation strategy should be quite convenient for this database because I'll be fragmenting many tables within the database on a hotel ID, where there will be between 700 and 1000 hotels. Users will only access data associated within their own fragment (hotel). Also, if one hotel's fragment goes down, the other hotels will not suffer (which should be convenient for backup/recovery too). Any insight would be very appreciated.
