You don't need to use logical volumes if you don't want. Logical Volumes are only usefull for Online if you want to mirror with LVM-Mirror (only available if you have purchased HP-UX Mirror). So you can use the raw device "/dev/vg__/rvol__" or you can use the whole disk (maximum 2 GB for Informix) with "/dev/rdsk/c0txs0" which allows you to address the hole disk and might be faster with the restriction that you have only the possibility to mirror with Online (but that is anyway faster when it's true what informix says in the manual). Please note: you can only use a maximum disk capacity of 2 GB for one chunk! So I cannot see any advantage using LVM together with online and raw devices. I hope this was helpful for you.
