A feature of Solaris (but not of some other flavours of UNIX, HP-UX for
example) is that the volume table of contents is held in the first few bytes
of the disk, and that the OS will allow this area to be over-written by raw
access (but not by a file system). Two ways to avoid this:
1. When slicing the disk with the fornat command, begin the first slice (say
c0t0d0s0) at cylinder 1 instead of cylinder 0.
2. If you cannot do this, use a small offset into the first slice of your
disk with your onspaces command. Again, by convention, c0t0d0s0 will be
the first slice on your disk, but it ain't necessarily so.
If you could send the output for a format print for the disk we can tell you
whether you be afflicted by the cylinder 0 problem.
