There are many, ranging from the trivial: AIX with 3 CPUs and 768MB of memory To the sublime: Sun E10000 w/ 40 CPUs and 8GB memory, multiple EMC disk arrays configured to RAID10 with multiple redundant fiber controllers configured as two separate domains running IDS/XPO with the data partitioned between the two domains. With only 512MB of memory as a base almost anything will be faster. Art S. Kagel

Since they are using IDS vs XPS, I'd say that they were looking for a lower cost solution than a large SUN box. Now keeping costs within a certain realm, lets look at the following. 1) Its a DW so its not the main system. I'll assume it doens't need to be a 7x24 available. So you don't need raid, however, you may want to consider mirroring the database. 2) Its less than 70 GB so it could easily fit on one DLT tape. So you could get a DLT drive for the system. (Solves the back up issue.) Now as to processor speed and size, you could stay in the IBM line, and upgrade, or you could look at alternatives like SUN or even dare I say it? An Intel box with XENON chips running Linux. I think VA "linux" Research has a couple of nice rack mount systems or you could build your own. But you are right, going to 2MB of RAM should speed things up. -Mikey
Art is right. This question is way too open ended. There needs to be some constraints identified before answering this question. A list follows 1) What is the databus being utilized - SCSI, SSA, other? 2) Is there a performance bottleneck and if so where? For example, are you running out of memory, is there an excessive wait time, is the CPU maxed out, etc, etc. 3) What type of processing is taking place? OLTP, heavy data processing, mixture? 4) Is there a RAID currently in use? If so what type? 5) What level of reliability is required by the user base? 6) How many users are concurrently accessing the system? 7) Is this a LAN or hardwire job? 8) What is the physical & logical log configuration? 9) Are you using the JFS (cooked file space) or RAW space? etc, etc, etc Jeff Kent Art S.
