Restores
Posted in 2010
Neil Truby couldn't restore an 11.50.FC6 Enterprise Edition ontape archive onto a Workgroup Edition (11.50.FC6WE) server, getting "Backup data version is not compatible with Online version" / invalid archive tape. Art Kagel explained that the instance's reserved page 0 and the archive header record the creating server version, and ontape/onbar check both; EE and WGE share source but are compiled differently. Neil's workaround: install EE, perform the restore with it, then shut down and restart the instance under WGE, which worked and passed checks. He notes the EE-to-WGE restriction is a nuisance for sites using EE in production and WGE for test.

I note that there are different code streams now between IDS Workgroup and
Enterprise Edition.
And I've just tried to restore an 11.5FC6 EE archive onto a test server
.....
ontape -r -t STDIO < /scratch//99.dmp
Backup data version is not compatible with Online version:
IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 11.50.FC6WE
Physical restore failed - function Invalid archive tape failed code -1 errno
0
Ugh!
A couple of questions:
- is this just something done in the version comparison part of the restore
program, or is there a fundamental difference in the structures?
- assuming the former can it be easily obviated?
Thanks
Neil
The first reserved page, page 0, contains the version of the server that
created the instance (ie with oninit -i) and so the only version that can
properly restore an archive. Similarly the archive itself writes out a
similar descriptive page at the beginning of the archive file/tape.
Ontape/onbar checks both IB.
All IDS releases share the same code base AFAIAA.

Well in 11.5 they definitely don't. Take IDS 11.5 FC6.
Enterprise (EE):
IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 11.50.FC6 Software Serial Number
AAA#B000000
WorkGroup WGE:
IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 11.50.FC6WE Software Serial Number
AAA#B000000
WGE now puts out messages at initialisation:
23:53:26 Warning: The IBM IDS Workgroup Edition license restriction limits
23:53:26 the total shared memory size for this server to 16777216 KB.
23:53:26 The size has been reset to the limit to bring up the database
server.
And, as you saw from my example, IDS 11.5 WGE cannot restore an EE archive,
even though the versions are otherwise identical.
However, having installed 11.5 EE to effect the restore I then stopped the
instance and brought it up with IDS 11.5 FC6 WGE and it is fine and has
passed all basic checks. So I think it is just a cosmetic thing.
And it's going to be a pain in the arse too :-((((

A competent programmer should be able to edit the archive file then? Wonder
if I can find one .....
Thanks
Neil
You've never heard of #DEFINE and #if DEFINED()? Same code, different
compiles. That's how the resoruce limitations are implemented as well as
the version checks.

Maybe we're just arguing semantics?
You have to download different software for WGE then for EE (I know, I've
just wasted half an hour downloading and installing EE just so I can do the
restore ;-)).
Depending upon which you've download they do different things, like put out
resource restriction messages, and in fact actually apply the restrictions.
Since there's nothing on my (or your syste,) which the oninit program can
query to decide whether you are an EE or WGE customer, the code *must* be
different, even if very supericially, surely ...?!
Granted and accepted.
As far as the semantics, when hard core developers (I still count myself in
there) talk about the 'code base' we refer to the source code files. If two
executable entities are compiled from the same source files, they have the
same code base.

Cool. Point is, as I have discovered you can't restore an EE backup to a WGE system, which caused me a headache, and which I think could affect quite a few sites, as it's quite common to have EE for live and WGE for non-production ....
