A couple of years ago, we compared Progress to Informix On-line 5.0x. We found that Progress was much slower than Informix, even with Informix using "cooked" files (Progress could not, at that time anyway, handle raw devices). Progress bills itself as very easy to use language, but we found that it was more "controlling" and kept wanting to tell you how to do things. If you are a programmer used to C, xBase, etc. you won't like it. If you aren't looking at large databases or huge performance requirements, progress might be a reasonable alternative. We use Informix with over 5 GB of data and are reasonably happy with it. Dan Grunberg danbg@infi.net Jackson Hewitt Tax Service The Number 2 Tax Service
