:We have 7.21 & 7.22 In either case, you cannot run onbar without acquiring
: third party software/storage manager for the XBSA interface.
:The following is from the Backup and Restore Guide:
:"ONBar and the storage manager communicate with each other through the
: X/Open Backup Services Application Programmer's Interface (XBSA).
: By using an open system interface to the storage manager, ONBar is able to
: work with a variety of storage managers that also use XBSA."
Wich in the case of ARCserve (http://www.chey.com) means first the
regular US$2000 for the backup software and then US$4500 in addition
for their XBSA based agent for OnBar. (This is according to the
pricelist on the web and on HP-UX and Sun, may be the SCO prices are
more sensible, but it doesn't look like the XBSA agent is available
for it.)
This may not be a problem for large installations, but for the small
onse we are talking about more than the price of all the hardware. I
don't know the price from other suppliers. Most of our customers use
ARCserve as that is the most used backup solution in PC networks
(Novell and Windows NT) here in Norway, and would like to be able to
use it on our Unix based solutions as well.
:The guide also states that you can run a simulated backup which does not
:require the XBSA storage manager but that is not true.
:Informix said that by mid year they will provide a storage manager of their
:own but that it will be very limited in its capabilities compared to third
:party software.
This is fine. As long as it can actually write the backup to
tapedrives on the same machine I assume it will solve the problems for
our smaller installations.
I would realy appreciate any more information on this as we have been
waiting a long time now for something better than ontape.
:The vendors/products we are looking at for storage manager programs are,
:SCH Reel, Legato, IBM Adsm, Dbatools Sqlbackup, HP Omniback, Spectralogic
:Alexandria. There are others. To my best knowledge, Dbatools and Omniback
:are currently available on HPUX 10.10 while the others are in beta testing.
:For SUN, Legato is available now. For AIX, Adsm is available.
:We are still in the process of evaluating these products. We may be doing
:some beta tests in the next few weeks. Legato appears to be willing to
:trial their beta copy.
:If you recieve more info from any sources consider copying us too. thanks
:If you have backup hardware other than 4mm DAT tell how it performs.
:If you have 4mm what is the best performance you get?
:If you currently use onarchive what kind of performance are you getting
:from it and how do you have it configured to get the best performance.
