Informix has sold |> more copies of RDBMS software to Unix customers EVERY year since the dawn |> of man, and in fact sold TWICE as many copies as Oracle/Sybase/Ingres/Progress |> combined last year. I believe Informix ~does~ claim to have the lowest support costs in the RDBMS industry. The theory is more $'s can go into R&D... the results help to sell more copies of software (as Harry points out); however, this can have a negative effect on the installed base (as Kevin points out). Probably most RDBMS vendors try to do the same so they don't get left behind, and we'd complain that they weren't spending $'s on R&D just as readily. Still, a few "restore the database" recommendations or a bad port for large, mission critical installations can leave a lasting disenchantment with Informix's approach to technical support.... I often feel that Informix would rather we were on PC's than UNIX. :-( -- Dave Newell/dbn@alert.com o_ _/ _/ _/_/_/ _/_/_/ _/_/_/ _0 Alert Centre, Inc. | ' _/ _/ _/ _/_/ _/ _/ _/ `\\ \\ Englewood, CO `\\(*)_/_/_/ _/ _/ _/_/ _/ (*)/ ' (303)488-7781_______________(*)___/ _/ _/_/_/ _/_/_/ _/ _/ _/________(*)_
