ODBC or Import Flat Files?

I set up my odbc connection between my access97 database and my informix server 7.2 and the connection is so slooooooow that i could probably manual input the data faster. Can anyone tell me if this is slow performance is normal for an odbc connection? Should I import the flat files or stick with the odbc connection? What are the pros and cons? Thanks in advance.
