FWD/BACK/GOTO ? / ESQL

Two "new-to-informix" type questions. The first interesting, the second boring. 1. The Questions: I am converting a non-SQL ap to informix and have always thought that a critical "basic" function of a database is to allow a dialog type box that has the three buttons: Forward, Backwards and Goto. Of course this should work on a huge database. If I declare a scrolling cursor it is obvious how to do the forward and back but I'm confused on how to implement goto. That is if I do a select *, then fetches, I can't dive into the middle of a database, then take a step backward. OK, confused? Here is an example. The Pacific Bell Residence phone book. User (Computer that is) presses GOTO button, types in "Kennedy, Peter". Actually the data was entered as Kennedy, Pete so the name that comes up is Kennedy, Putunia. Our Computer user wants to press the back key. Informix's tech support specialist suggested copying the entire table into a scratch buffer. Hmm. I'd appreciate any and all suggestions on the best way to implement this kind of thing and of course will post the good results I get. 2. More Question: In ESQL, how can I access the hidden variable rowid? Or any other integer for that matter. Hmmm. Thanks in advance. peter@kellner.com
