Something for the mentally challenged

Hey sports fans, Just back from getting my backlog of mail in Chicago. If any of you are into ACM's SIGOPS, check out the 16th Symposium held back in Oct! Two things of interest. 1) Check out Ousterhout's presentation "Why Threads Are a Bad Idea (for most purposes) You can download it from his website at: http://www.scriptics.com/people/john.ousterhout/ (Postscript and Power Point Slides. 2) Check out the article "Towards Transparent and Efficient Software Distributed Shared Memory" on Page 157 Research done using Oracle, but you get the idea. Now why did I mention #1 ? Simple. A while back, someone was talking about problems using threads. I mentioned that he should consider going back to using the fork() method of creating children. (Simpler and has less problems with contention) I got some yahoo saying how much better threads where since there was less overhead in interprocess communications. Well, here's another way to look at it. I guess my point is, that in order to be good at what we do, we must try and expand our talents and consider all options. While OS's are not everyone's cup of tea, it does give some of us a reason to drink and help ponder the meaning of life. (There's a lot of similarities between OS and RDBMS development.) Oh well, we now return you to your rather mundane discussions of where Phil White is hiding and why he calls his pet Bull, Don Pepe ;-) [Hey, everyone has to have a hobby, even when they are hiding out in the rual country side of Spain.] -Mikey -- #include <std_disclaimer.h> /* Mike Segel (MS385) */ #include <No_Spam.h> #ifdef OFFENDED_BY_CONTENT The author takes no responsibility for this post. Any resemblence to a coherent rational thought is purely coincidence. -The Management. #endif ***************************** Due to AGIS's Refusal to Act Responsibly We are blocking all of their domains at the packet level.
