This was true in early 5.0x releases, it is not a problem in 5.05+ or 7.xx. Actually it was compiled then translated into byte codes to hex digits and stored. The new versions are much better, plus ODS 7.xx added a stored procedure cache which eliminates the problem althogether for active procs, the cache can be seeded by updating stats on crucial procedures when the engine comes online.
