There are several scripts and 4gl's available (check out IIUG web sight) to do the
recommended method of update statistics. We found, as you did, that "resonable speed" was
not achieved using these scripts/4gl's. So, since each of these can take a table as an
argument, we developed scripts that allow us to set up a configurable amount of "drones"
to do these in parallel. We call a process that selects the table list from systables and
then sets up X number of "drones" to start the update statistics process working from that
table list (there is a locking mechanism in the script to keep the drones from grabbing
the same table). We are currently running with 9 drones (i.e. doing 9 concurrent update
statistics on 9 different tables) and can accomplish the update statistics in just under 2
hours. We could probably speed this up more by adding more drones (it is a command line
parameter) but I haven't tested that yet to see what if any speed benefit we could
achieve.

Hi,
We are looking for input on running Update Statistics on some reasonably
large tables (approximately 80 million rows) and are looking for a
combination of reasonable speed and reasonably accruate results. We
have the methods in the Informix Documentation and are not getting the
results we need. Anybody have any suggestions. The DBs are 7.23 on Sun
Solaris 2.5 platform.
Thanks for the input.
